Well, it has been quite a while since I wrote anything. Let's just say last week was crazy. I have been thinking about how I need to review Netflix.
In the beginning I wasn't convinced. My husband's boss told him about it when it first came to Canada and so we checked it out... the selection shown did not impress. We either owned the shows already on dvd or would never have watched them in a million years. I heard movies would be added as time passed. We decided to wait on it.
A few months later I was visiting my brother and I saw that Netflix--which he had on his Wii--had some shows I wouldn't have minded seeing. So when a promo came up so that I got credits for my online game if I signed up for the months free trial I did.
And I was hooked.
First off, if you hate the fact that the only new releases are usually shows that bombed and most of the shows are a few years old or older, get over it. Netflix costs 8$. What do you expect? But for 8$ the selection is endless.
Yes there are a lot of movies I would never watch. But there are a lot of movies I still have on my list to watch.
Have kids? Netflix has a lot of children's tv shows and movies. And kid's like watching the same thing over and over so you don't need cable for that tv entertainment time.
Another thing to know is that only on your computer can you see all the shows available. On the consoles you have to do a search for a movie if you can't find it in the list. The lists only show 75 from each category. Also, if you look at Netflix but don't sign up it doesn't show all the movies. This was a point we missed. I know you smart people out there wouldn't have, but we did.
I have been able to watch the BBC shows I love as well as movies I missed seeing and don't really want to rent or buy before watching them first. And while we don't watch Netflix constantly, we have watched a fair bit and have never gone near our bandwidth limit.
In conclusion if you have been humming and hawing about it my recommendation is just sign up for the one month free trial and see if you likes it... but don't forget to cancel if you don't. You wouldn't want to be out eight bucks the month after your free trial. (after all eight bucks could buy you a Happy Meal at McDonald's)
I love having Netflix. At first I was disappointed with the selection, but like you said they do have quite a few that I would watch as well. And the other day I went out to the video store and rented a new release movie, and it turned out Netflix actually had it! I hadn't even bothered to check since I figured they wouldn't have it. Silly me. I was out 5 bucks.
